Once, Sarah Bingham's biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she's handed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control...In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible - when it means forfeiting the world she's always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

My thoughts

Darkness Dawns, the first in the new Immortal Guardian series, has a very interesting, and distinctive take on the paranormal world of vampires. This is one of the few times I have enjoyed a book more for its plot than I did for the romance.
As a personal preference of mine, I like when the romance is developed and pace a little better, and by that I mean, make me believe the love, grow the relationship, and that to me only happens with time, I was a little turned off by the fact, that the main characters felt for each other so quickly, but if you are bigger romantic than me, this shouldn’t bother you at all, as a matter of fact, I can honestly say, once a while it’s nice to have the love story be uncomplicated, sweet and just plain romantic, this is exactly the kind of romance we get here. Having said that, I’m going to share what I thought made this book a very good listen; for starters, the book was very well written. The threads that were formed at the beginning are shaping a very exciting, complex and imaginative world, where immortals, vampires and humans play a big role in bringing enough action and suspense to keep the story very engaging. Besides the enjoyment I got from being taken in a different direction, with new scientific elements that made the story fresh and inventive, I’m getting a real good feeling about the following books in this series, the introduction of very exciting secondary characters really heighten my interest, I wouldn’t be surprised, if the following book or the next one after, comes to hold a place on my favorite’s shelf.
The main characters are very likable; Roland, the hero and the protagonist, is another departure from the norm, although a loner and a little antisocial, is really a very nice guy, he’s all that, (OK, yes he’s hot) without suffering from the arrogance syndrome, but yet, never appears weak, plus he displays a sense of vulnerability that only adds to his charm. Sarah is a strong and kind heroine and never comes across as a damsel in distress.
The potential, the atypical vampire world, the sweet, uncomplicated but hot romance, and hints to exciting things to come, more than deserved a recommendation to all PNR fans, especially if you enjoy a series like, The Midnight Breeds by Lara Adrian.

Narration
The main reason I am taking  this book from 3. 1/2 to 4 hearts, is due to excellent interpretation by Kirsten Potter, again another case of a narrator making an alright book, into a much better one, the overall  feeling  of this world was extremely well conveyed,  the suspense and  tension are nicely transmitted to the listener. The English accent was excellent for the portrayal of Roland, the remaining male characters were distinctively performed in a very believable manner. Ms. Potter does a terrific job with Sarah’s personality, making her come across as a very likable heroine, sweet, strong and with a good sense of humor, oh! I must mention, she’s  an absolute pro at reading the hot scenes. All in all, this was an excellent narration.
