Once the flames are ignited . . .

Miranda Ellis is a woman tormented. Plagued since birth by a strange and powerful gift, she has spent her entire life struggling to control her exceptional abilities. Yet one innocent but irreversible mistake has left her family's fortune decimated and forced her to wed London's most nefarious nobleman.

They will burn for eternity . . .

Lord Benjamin Archer is no ordinary man. Doomed to hide his disfigured face behind masks, Archer knows it's selfish to take Miranda as his bride. Yet he can't help being drawn to the flame-haired beauty whose touch sparks a passion he hasn't felt in a lifetime. When Archer is accused of a series of gruesome murders, he gives in to the beastly nature he has fought so hard to hide from the world. But the curse that haunts him cannot be denied. Now, to save his soul, Miranda will enter a world of dark magic and darker intrigue. For only she can see the man hiding behind the mask.

My Thoughts

Can you say historical, paranormal, gothic, romantic suspense, thrilling, funny, magic, sexy and sexual tension in one word? Yes, FIRELIGHT.
These novels weren't even on my radar, but after reading a review of Moonglow, (book # 2 in the series) I decided to give this novel a shot, and oh boy! I’m so glad I did.
Set in Victorian England,  from the strong characters to the familiar, yet unique plot, this book was a treat from beginning to end,
So you think you have heard it all before; a masked hero, a heroine of incomparable beauty, an arranged marriage and a romance story......Ah! But not so fast, because Kristen Callihan has created a world that will not only pull you in, but will have you captivated with her originality and clever cocktail of genres.
Beautifully crafted, the main character’s love story will have to survive their differences, secrets and their share of enemies, all while the sexual tension heats up to scorching degrees (my cup of tea), to the hardcore romance listener this might be a little bit of a turnoff, as it takes a while in the story before these two get hot and heavy, and the murder plot seems to take time away from the romance, but for me, it was paced perfectly.
The battle to save each others souls brings the romance to the front and unfolds a beautiful love story.
The magic and paranormal elements are nicely blended to give the novel, yet another feeling that accompanied by the darkness and suspense  takes the novel up a notch from your regular paranormal or historical romance.
To top it all, Ms. Callihan also managed to create credible and exciting secondary characters that will have you downloading the next novel within minutes of the conclusion of Firelight...Yes, It’s that good!
I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this novel, and how highly I recommend it to any fan of the paranormal or historical romance genre, including urban fantasy.

 Narration

OK, so after all that enthusiasm, why isn’t it 5 stars? Well, it comes down to the narration.
First I like to give you my opinion of what I thought was excellent from Moira Quirk (new- to- me narrator), and that was her interpretation of Miranda, the ambiance of the novel and her ability to connect you to the characters and the world in general.
Her clear British accent - I always have to say that, because there are some British narrators that frankly, lose me with their pronunciations, but I digress, I have no problems at all with her accent, in fact, it was perfect to bring this world to life.
My complaint comes from the times I found her  a bit monotone, and it distracted me a little bit, nevertheless the story comes on top in spite of it.
Sometimes it takes the first book to get used to a narrator’s style - if the readings were competent enough and by all means that was the case here.
Her male voices were just OK, not deep enough for my taste, but a very nice effort to make the distinction in the manner they were delivered.
All in all, I would give 4 stars to her performance,  I’m looking forward to having a better listening experience with Moonglow.

Natural Born Charmer (Audiobook Review)

Audiobook Review
By: Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Narrated by: Anna Fields
Published by:  Harper Audio 01/2007
HOT

Dean Robillard is the Chicago Stars' hotshot quarterback. Not only does he have lightening reflexes on the field, he is also utterly gorgeous. First introduced in the critically acclaimed Match Me If You Can, Dean is trying to recover (both mentally and physically) from a shoulder injury by taking a road trip. Along the way, he meets Blue, a beautiful woman down on her luck, and as they spend more time together their attraction grows. Blue has had a string of bad relationships and doesn't want to trust Dean right away. But they wind up living together, along with Dean's troubled half-sister, and learn that families and luck work in mysterious ways.

I love these characters in the seventh book of the Chicago Stars series and I adore their love story. Ms. Phillips sure knows how to set up a “meet cute,” and this one, taking place on a highway outside of Denver with Blue Bailey walking down a hot dusty road in a beaver costume – plus a killing rage – is perfect. When Dean Robillard, rich superstar quarterback, crosses her path, he is taken by surprise in one humorous situation after another on their road trip to Tennessee. Nevertheless, each scene carries a Real Life believability that lets us get drawn into the deepening depths of their relationship.

Ms. Phillips also knows how to write amazing secondary characters and these are some of her best. There is one scene between an aging rocker and his neglected, vulnerable young daughter that still has the ability to make my throat swell, my eyes tear.

This story can be read as a “standalone”; however, you would probably enjoy it better if you read this series in order. A younger Dean is deviously charming in Match Me If You Can; while in this one he is still deliciously witty, but confronted with those demons in life that make one run or stand and mature.

Narration
Man-oh-man! I love this book. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve read it. It is on my “re-read-for-comfort” shelf, which I desperately needed now. My life is currently too crazy to sit and read, so I popped in my ear buds and tried the audiobook this time, narrated by the wonderful Anna Fields.

I have heard nothing but great things about this reader, so I don’t know why I waited so long to listen to a story she narrates. If a character speaks softly, she delivers the line softly. If they turn sarcastic, she complies. If they gasp, she gasps. Their voice breaks, so does hers. Astonishing as it sounds, not all readers do this! Some dialogue doesn’t have adjective queues; nevertheless, this talented raconteur intuitively knows how to delivery Ms. Phillips’ clever quips or tender moments in context. She definitely kicks this story up a notch. I highly recommend her as narrator.

Dream Lake (Audiobook Review)

Audiobook Review
By: Lisa Kleypas
Narrated by: Jeff Cummings
Published by: Brilliance Audio 08/2012

Hot
9 hrs and 22mins
Sample

Dream Lake takes readers once again to the exquisite setting of Friday Harbor, and tells the story of ZoÓ« Hoffman, an innkeeper who has all but given up on love. She’s a gentle, romantic soul, but has been so hurt in the past that she dare not trust her heart with anyone. Especially not Alex Nolan. Alex is the most haunted of all the Nolan brothers.

He drinks to keep his demons at bay and not only has he given up on love, he has never, ever believed in it. ZoÓ« and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow.

But sometimes, it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark. Dream Lake is classic Lisa Kleypas: romantic, powerful, emotional, and magical.

As far as storyline, I just loved this one! The talented Ms. Kleypas does an excellent job of making me like Alex Nolan – who is not only an alcoholic, but the child of two hard-core alcoholics, and therefore a bit of an a$$hat – which is a pretty hefty feat. He is visited by a ghost, who only he can see; their interactions made me smile more than once and out right laugh several times. For those readers who did NOT like the magical realism in Rainshadow Road, this ghostly manifestation blends in quite effortlessly with the main plot.

Zoe was easy to like, as I enjoy gentle, kind-hearted heroines, not to mention all the yummy things she cooks. Here Ms. Kleypas shines, you see her brilliance as she carefully picks just the right descriptive, sensuous word to convey something that is a very visceral experience. While Alex’s sobriety was relatively pain free compared to Real Life, it was believable that tender Zoe could pierce his “bulletproof reserve.” I also liked that this story runs parallel in time to parts of Sam and Lucy’s story; we get to see Sam falling in love from another perspective.

The only thing I had to laugh at was that Zoe decides to remodel her grandmother’s lake cabin, which is what brings Alex back into the picture after their first disastrous meeting. I happen to be remodeling my house right now and Zoe’s demolition and modernization goes a lot smoother than what I’m experiencing – or ever heard tell. Where is delicious Alex Nolan when I need him?

Narration
Dream Lake is narrated by Jeff Cummings who does NOT seem to be the right fit for this one. Not a great job, but not a disaster, either. An “okay” performance. I’d probably like him better reading something else, as he has a nice voice. Here he falls a little short due to making Zoe sound a bit too “wispy” – a common trait among male narrators trying to do female voices; though, he does a fair job on Zoe’s grandmother, “Upsie.” While I liked his Alex, I didn’t care for his Sam, who is the hero of book #2 in the Friday Harbor series. I also felt that later in the book he began to make Alex sound like Sam at times. He also didn’t differentiate the voice of the Ghost enough for me.
