Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan's clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.
The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin's strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

My Thoughts

I had no intention of listening to this when I did. Having just finished The Secret by Julie Garwood I didn't think I could enjoy another Historical without a change of genre in between, but wow! Maya Banks and Kristen Potter are becoming one those magical teams that once it grabs you, doesn’t let go until you reach the end.
I loved this one! I didn’t think I could take another over-the- top alpha male story, but when the author beautifully combines intrigue, suspense, action  and a scorching -hot romance, she(he) has my undivided attention, and even though, I didn’t find the story particularly original, the characters were certainly real, and I found myself completely invested in their outcome.
Mairin’s desirable dowry has forced her to live her life hidden in an abbey; that is until she gets kidnapped by a greedy and horrible man. While, in captivity, she meets the son of the Laird Ewan McCabe, who is also a prisoner - Mairin quickly takes the child under her protection and promises to see him home safely.
But when the little boy’s family comes to rescue him after their scape, they didn't know that they will also be rescuing the illegitimate daughter of the former King of Scotland.
The last thing Ewan McCabe needs is for this feisty little woman to come and challenge his authority, not to mention his heart; nevertheless, this is exactly what Marin does.
I loved both protagonists, Ewan as the Laird of his clan was strong, sexy and everything a Highlander should be, including his stubbornness, at the same time, Mairin is the perfect heroine, strong and self-assured, but what I loved the most  was how she kept her innocence even when pretended to be way ahead of her years.
I really enjoyed the witty dialogue (both equally gave as good as they got), and I know that sometimes it sounded too modern, but the smooth flow of the writing doesn’t give you time to get distracted by it.
I loved the introduction to the McCabe Brothers; I’m looking forward to picking up the next novel, which lucky for me, is already published on audio.
I highly recommend this audio to any historical fan that is looking for, a HOT romance, a great story with a little suspense, intrigue, and real characters, but is not expecting the deepness of a novel like Outlander.

The Narrator
Kristen Potter
Narration

It's official! Kristen Potter just became one of my very top narrators. To be honest, she played a big part in my decision to purchase this novel. I knew she was going to be great, and she didn't disappoint me.
I love the way she gives the characters authenticity, and how she immediately connects you to the setting. Her interpretations of the characters are flawless, as well as, the way she conveys the mood of the story.
With an accurately voiced Scottish accent, she lets Ms. Banks' writing do its magic.  She also gets high marks when it comes to male voices; you never have to doubt these warriors' masculinity.
The pace and tone are perfect; I never had to play with the speed at all.
All in All, this is a 5 star narration, and a pleasure to listen to.
